What do dads really want for Fathers Day 2021

3 Mins read

It’s that time of year when families rack their brains wondering what to get the dads in their lives. Sales of socks, beer, aftershave and wallets increase as we try to guess what the ideal gift might be. Now guess is the key word here becuase often dads are asked and the answers aren’t always straight forward. We’re getting better but we’re. not quite there yet. So what is it that dads really want for Fathers Day 2021? Let’s think about it.

To help me get my head around what needed to be in this post, I went out with the family for a pre Fathers Day celebration courtesy of Canary Wharf. There are loads of free activities for all the family. From Mini Golf and other floor games in Columbus Courtyard, to Ping Pong in Cabot Square or even a game of basketball on the brand new basketball court designed by Yinka Illori. There is so much to do that they even have their own Fathers Days guide to help you choose! Not only that, there are lots of shops and restaurants to check out and we included a trip to the cinema and a meal at Wahaca’s. One of our favourites.

Fathers Day Meal

What I learnt…

After our trip I had a good think and narrowed it down to 3 essential things you need to think about when it comes to what dads really want for Fathers Day 2021. They are so simple but simple is effective in this situation. Nobody needs to make a big fuss… Your dad will tell you that. 😜

Ask First

It’s the obvious thing to do and we’ve already mentioned that the answers aren’t always forthcoming, but are we asking the right questions. Maybe try asking what dad doesn’t want rather than what he does want. That way you can eliminate things from the list that you know won’t get used. And you avoid having gifts gathering dust in some corner because dad doesn’t want to get rid of a gift.

Give Time

More often than not the best gifts involve time rather than money. Making a card, organising a photo collage, or helping dad with jobs all go down very well. They also increase that family bond which is what we are really celebrating here. The personalised feel of gifts like this cannot be overplayed. What you need to remember when planning these is to allow time. There’s no point trying to get this done the night before. It will always be a little rushed, and there’s nothing worse than a gift that feels like it was last minute.

Make Memories

This has to be the best gift of all for Fathers Day 2021. Go for a meal, organise a get together for all the dads in your family, play some crazy golf. It really doesn’t matter what it is. As long as you are making some good memories these will be priceless later on. Not only will they be something your dad will be able to look back on. They will be something you can look back on as a family.
