This four ingredient recipe is so straightforward, even a toddler could do it – in fact, mine did!

People assume that baking with children is messy, chaotic and stressful. However, it doesn’t have to be because with some simple preparation, you can take the stress out of baking! .

There are so many benefits to getting children involved in the kitchen, In addition to providing the perfect opportunity to spend quality time together getting creative, it also gets them trying new foods, and gives a sense of achievement for your little one when they see (and taste) the finished product.

My top tips for minimising stress and mess are:
  • Be Prepared – have the ingredients and equipment out ready
  • Relax and enjoy the process. No-one is expecting a Bake Off standard Masterpiece!
  • Get the kids to do the washing up… Always!

🌹Apple Roses🌹

This easy recipe to make mum smile creates 6 gorgeous edible roses.

Ingredients:
1 packet of ready rolled puff pastry
2 – 3 pink lady apples
Apricot jam
Lemon juice

Equipment
Microwaveable bowl
Muffin tray, greased
Pastry brush, or a clean paint brush
Sharp Knife

Method:

Pre-heat the oven to 200c / 180c Fan

Preparation:

Adults:

Step 1:
slice the apples in half and remove the core.
Slice the apples VERY thinly, and pop into a microwaveable bowl. Squeeze the lemon juice over the apple to stop it browning.

Step 2:
Next add a tiny splash of water and pop the bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time, until the apple slices are soft but still hold their shape. Leave on a kitchen towel to cool.

Step 3:
The last adult step is to unroll the pastry and cut into 6 strips, length-ways.

Get your very own Little Bakers involved.

Step 4:
Ask your little chef/s to carefully and gently brush the jam all over the 6 strips of pastry.

Step 5:
Next show your little one how to carefully arrange the soft apple slices along the top edge of the pastry. They need to be slightly overlapping and half sitting on the pastry, half on the worktop. The peel needs to be above the pastry as it forms the red petals.

Step 6:
Now you need to tuck the apples up into bed! Fold up the bottom of the pastry strip and gently roll the pastry from one end to the other. You’ll end up with a perfect rose!

Put the rolled rose into the greased muffin tin, and repeat with all 6 strips.

Step 7:
Once all six roses are ready, you should put them into the oven for 15 minutes,
Remove from the oven and place tin foil gently over the top of your masterpieces (this will stop them from burning). Then return to the oven for another 20-25 minutes until the pastry is cooked.

Step 8:
When cooked, remove your master pieces from the oven, and leave to cool in the tin for ten minutes. Then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely on a wire rack.

Lastly decorate with a dusting of icing sugar (optional) and serve this easy recipe to make mum smile on mother’s day!

Enjoy! x

About author
Sasha was a teacher for 11 years, and chose to become a stay at home mum when her twins were born. At first it was difficult to find activities that the twins wanted to be involved in – until they started baking! Sasha found that most recipes designed for baking with children were high in sugar and e-numbers from coloured icing. This is when Hungry Little Bakers was born; Sasha dived into the recipe world, creating delicious, healthy and nutritious bakes – and designed to be easy for toddlers to make.
